The 12 Palaces
of Zi Wei Dou Shu

The 12 Palaces divide a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart into connected fields of life. A Palace name sets the question; its Major Stars describe the style of that field; the opposite and trine Palaces provide context; transformations and time cycles show when the pattern receives emphasis.

A Palace is a position, not a sealed compartment

Once the Life Palace is placed, the remaining Palaces follow in a fixed sequence. Every Palace faces an opposite Palace and belongs to a four-position frame with two trine Palaces. This is San Fang Si Zheng—the Three Directions and Four Cardinal Positions. Reading a Palace normally means opening this wider frame.

Self, Siblings and Spouse

Life
The chart’s central reference for temperament, orientation and the way circumstances are met.
Siblings
Siblings, peers and close horizontal relationships, including patterns of support or competition.
Spouse
Marriage and sustained one-to-one partnership: expectations, attraction and adjustment.

The Spouse Palace is not a yes-or-no marriage switch. Its stars, transformations and relationship with the Life Palace describe how partnership is approached.

Children, Wealth and Health

Children
Children, juniors, care and what a person brings forward into the next generation or project.
Wealth
The manner of acquiring, holding and circulating material resources.
Health
Traditional symbolic indications about bodily load, habits and recovery conditions.

A star in the Health Palace is not a medical diagnosis. Physical symptoms and treatment decisions belong with qualified healthcare professionals.

Travel, Friends and Career

Travel
The world outside the familiar base: movement, exposure, opportunity and how others encounter the person.
Friends
Friends, colleagues, collaborators and the wider network of exchange.
Career
Public role, working style, responsibility and the shape of achievement—not a single job title.

Property, Wellbeing and Parents

Property
Home, living base, accumulated environment and property-related matters.
Wellbeing
Inner satisfaction, mental space, private thought and the capacity to enjoy what life provides.
Parents
Parents, seniors, approval, protection and sometimes documents or institutional contact.

What does an empty Palace mean?

A Palace without one of the 14 Major Stars is not an absent life area. Readers examine the opposite Palace, the two trine positions, supporting stars and transformations. Some schools describe this as borrowing the opposite stars; others preserve the empty Palace’s distinct status. Either way, “nothing is there” is not the conclusion.

A worked Career Palace example

Hypothesis: Tian Fu occupies the Career Palace, Po Jun faces it from the opposite position, and Hua Lu connects through the Wealth Palace. Tian Fu traditionally favors stewardship and consolidation; Po Jun introduces demolition and reorganization. Hua Lu links the pattern to resource flow.

The reading is not forced into “stable job” versus “constant career change.” It may describe a person who creates stability by managing restructuring. The current decade limit and annual transformations are still needed to decide when conservation or disruption moves forward.

Natal, decade and annual Palaces

The natal 12 Palaces provide the base coordinate system. A decade limit reassigns the working frame for a broad phase, and the annual chart narrows attention further. An annual Career Palace should be read alongside what that location means in the natal and decade layers; the overlap gives the year its specific context.

Names vary across schools and languages

Career may be called Official or Business Palace; Friends may appear as Servants or Associates; Spouse may be rendered Marriage. The Body Palace is not a thirteenth Palace: it overlaps one of the twelve and adds emphasis to how the chart is enacted. Calendar conversion, late-night birth boundaries and transformation tables can also vary.

A reliable reading order

  1. Confirm the chart convention, Life Palace and Body Palace.
  2. Identify Major Star combinations in the target Palace.
  3. Open the opposite and two trine Palaces.
  4. Add supporting and challenging stars.
  5. Trace the Four Transformations.
  6. Overlay decade and annual cycles last.
